Featured Artist Holly Bailey
After longing after one of Holly Baileys degree show paintings for some time, I am so pleased to have two of Baileys pieces available at hutt.
Holly is a Bristol based artist who’s work celebrates vivid colours and explores shadows and reflected forms. I hope you enjoy my interview with Holly, discovering what inspires her and her practice.
Can you talk a little about your journey to become an artist?
I’ve always studied art; Drawing was always my chosen medium which led me to study Drawing and Print at UWE, it was there I fell in love with paint and my journey really began. When covid hit during my final year, my time and studies were challenged, but this eventually put everything into perspective of what it means to be an artist in relation to me. This has now turned into a form of communication. In the future I am planning to continue my studies within the world of art, health and wellbeing, to help others communicate with the same passion.
How would you describe your practice.
The bulk of my practice contains everyday patterns and interestingly arranged objects or decor. I tend to romanticise and express the details through layering, collage and colour with the goal of evoking the feeling of home and comfort whilst breaking into a new reality. I like contrasting sharp objects or more jarring parts with softer still life. I'm constantly experimenting with this juxtaposition.
What inspires you to paint and do your other interests influence your art?
I'm selective with the places and people that inspire me, because I want my art to be a reflection of what is personal to me. Every drawing and painting I've done roots back to all the people in my life and their environments through memory or being present.
Which artists inspire you?
(Honourable mentions for me would be matisse and paul klee) some that have recently inspired me include Chloe Cheese and David Pearce.
If you could choose any piece of art by any artist emerging or established to hang at home what would it be?
I’m in awe of Jessie Woodward and her colourful pieces, I feel that it would definitely be a statement to have hanging in my own home.
You explore working in different mediums within your practice, is there any medium you would like to explore in the future?
Printmaking is something I've always wanted to dive into more, especially monoprinting. I've always loved the idea of bringing my painted pots to life too within the world of clay and pottery.
Are there any exhibitions you have recently been to that you might recommend or are looking forward to visiting?
Locally known to Bristol as “Big Jeff”, I am looking forward to his upcoming exhibition. He’s an inspirational character and it’s important to support local artists that help raise awareness through their own difficulties.
