Philip Jones

Celebrating a Master of British Contemporary Art

Philip Jones (1933–2008) was a British artist whose innovative work left an indelible mark on the 20th-century art scene. Known for his dynamic approach to form and texture, Jones combined traditional techniques with a forward-thinking perspective. His art, spanning several decades, inspires collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide.

Philip Jones's work often leaned toward abstraction, as he skillfully distilled the essential elements of a scene into his compositions. By stripping away unnecessary details, he brought a focus to the core of his subject matter, creating pieces that felt both intentional and evocative. His use of colour further enhanced this effect, blending subtle shades with occasional muted bursts of unexpected hues. This deliberate approach lent his work a sense of balance and intrigue, inviting viewers to engage with the interplay of form, colour, and emotion.

Throughout his career, Philip Jones exhibited at prestigious galleries and institutions, including Stockholm Galerie Bleue, R.A. Summer Exhibition, AIA Gallery, Mansard Gallery, Heals, the Contemporary Arts Society exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery and Chicago's International Art Exposition, to name but a few.

“It is a timeless world that Jones evokes, where everything is in a constant state of change, yet nothing finally changes: the eternals of light and air and, above all, colour are firmly in place.  Everything is free, yet everything is under the artist’s control.”
