Description

A richly coloured, pigment-dense still life painted in an impasto technique, this mid-20th-century work by Albin Ferneman captures a tabletop arrangement: a crisp apple juxtaposed with a stack of books. The heavy, textured brushwork and vibrant palette reflect the influence of French modernism interpreted through Ferneman’s Swedish lens. Presented in its original frame, this piece is ideal for collectors of Scandinavian art or decorative mid-century pieces.

About the Artist

Albin Verner Ferneman (1894–1974) was a Swedish modernist painter born in Fernebo. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm before continuing his training in Paris, where he was influenced by Maurice Denis and the circle of early 20th-century French modernists.

Ferneman’s work reflects the colour-rich, decorative qualities of post-Impressionism, combined with a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility. His subjects included still lifes, portraits, landscapes and cityscapes, often inspired by the industrial and rural settings of Storbrohyttan and Filipstad. Blending French modernist influence with Swedish regional identity, Ferneman developed a unique voice within 20th-century Scandinavian art.
